Beggar complains of coin glut, moves high court

Vastavam web:Kanchan Rui Das has moved a petition before a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice T Chakraborty of the Calcutta High Court, claiming that banks were not exchanging coins for currency notes which has affected his profession of begging. Claiming that Re 1 and Rs 2 coins posed to be the biggest problems, the petitioner counsel submitted that PSU banks were refusing to accept these and thus he was saddled with a large number of coins. Appearing for Reserve Bank of India, counsel Suchismita Ghosh Chatterjee submitted that coins from Re 1 upwards are legal tender. Chatterjee also submitted that the petitioner has not made allegation against any particular bank or its branch. The court noted that the petitioner has not made any particular bank a party in his petition.
