On December 11 in 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21st as International Day of Yoga by Honorable Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 where in he stated: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition .
The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.The theme for the 2017 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is ‘Yoga for Health.’ The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body.There are various yoga postures or asanas that help you to keep your body fit and healthy. Pranayama or breathing exercise helps you to rejuvenate your mind and soul. It is said you should begin your day with pranayama and it helps you to think better and stay calm and peaceful.

More than 170 countries including USA, China, Canada took part in this event which was celebrated for the first time on the 21st of Jan, 2015. It was celebrated on international level by organizing the activities like yoga training campus, yoga competitions and so many activities to enhance your awareness about the innumerable benefits that you can derive by practicing yoga on a daily basis.
The declaration of International Day of Yoga is the great moment for the India in the history. On June 21st 2015 the first International Yoga day was celebrated in different parts of the world. The main action was centered on the Indian capital city of New Delhi, where a record number of 35985 people from 84 different nations practiced yoga on Rajpath for 35 minutes. It was a world record in itself. It is estimated that around 200 million people worldwide practice yoga. The number stands at 20 million in United States alone. With this declaration more and more people are expected to adopt this method of healing which would benefit them in the long run.
